10 Warning Signs Your Liver May Need a Health Check
Your liver is one of the hardest-working organs in your body. It filters toxins from your blood, produces bile for digestion, stores energy, and performs over 500 vital functions — silently, every single day. The problem? Your liver rarely complains until things get serious.
In India, liver diseases are more common than most people realise. From fatty liver linked to our love of fried food and late-night dinners, to viral hepatitis and alcohol-related damage — millions of Indians are walking around with a liver problem they don`t even know about yet.
That`s why knowing the early warning signs is so important. And the good news is — a simple
Liver Function Test (LFT) can catch problems early before they become something serious. Here are 10 signs your liver is waving a red flag — and what you should do next.
-
Constant Fatigue That Just Won`t Go Away:
Feeling thakaan (tired) all the time — even after a full night`s sleep — is one of the most overlooked liver symptoms. When your liver isn`t functioning properly, it struggles to filter toxins from your blood. These toxins build up and make you feel exhausted, foggy, and drained without any obvious reason. If you`re someone who blames it on "stress" or "busy life" but nothing seems to help, it`s worth checking your liver health.
Yellowing of Skin or Eyes (Jaundice / Peeli Skin)
This one is hard to miss. When your liver can`t process bilirubin properly, it builds up in your blood and causes your skin and the whites of your eyes to turn yellow. In Hindi, we often call it peeli aankhein or jaundice. While jaundice is common in newborns and usually harmless, in adults it is almost always a sign of a liver, gallbladder, or bile duct issue. Don`t ignore it — get an LFT done immediately.
Dark Yellow or Brown Urine (Even Without Dehydration)
If your urine looks like chai without milk — dark brown or deep yellow — and you`ve been drinking enough water, this could signal that excess bilirubin is being flushed out through your kidneys instead of your liver. Many people assume it`s just because they didn`t drink enough water. But if it persists even after you increase your water intake, your liver needs attention.
Pale, Clay-Coloured Stools
On the other side of things, if your stool is unusually light-coloured — pale, grey, or clay-like — it may mean bile isn`t reaching your digestive system properly. Bile is what gives stool its normal brown colour, and when the liver or bile ducts are blocked or inflamed, this process gets disrupted. Most people don`t pay much attention to stool colour, but it`s actually a surprisingly useful health indicator.
Swollen Stomach or Bloating (Especially Around the Abdomen)
This is different from the regular gas or bloating you feel after eating rajma-chawal. Liver-related swelling — called ascites — happens when fluid builds up in the abdominal cavity due to liver damage or cirrhosis. Your stomach may look and feel distended or tight, almost like you`re bloated but it doesn`t go away. If your abdomen looks visibly swollen without a clear reason, it`s time to see a doctor and get your liver checked.
Nausea, Vomiting, or Loss of Appetite
A poorly functioning liver affects your digestive system significantly. You may feel nauseous (ji machlana), lose interest in food, or feel like vomiting — especially after eating greasy or oily food.
Many people in India put this down to acidity or an upset stomach and reach for antacids. But if these symptoms are recurring and aren`t linked to a specific food or stomach bug, your liver enzymes and protein levels should be tested
Pain or Discomfort in the Upper Right Abdomen
Your liver sits on the upper right side of your abdomen, just below your rib cage. If you feel a dull ache, pressure, or discomfort in that area — especially after meals — it could be a sign of liver inflammation or enlargement. It`s a symptom that often gets confused with kidney pain or a muscle pull, but if it`s persistent and specifically on the right side under your ribs, don`t brush it off.
Itchy Skin Without Any Rash
This one surprises a lot of people. When bile salts accumulate in the bloodstream due to liver dysfunction, they can deposit under the skin and cause intense itching — without any visible rash or skin condition.
If you or someone in your family is scratching constantly but there`s no skin allergy or rash to explain it, and antihistamines or creams aren`t helping, it`s a good idea to get a liver test done.
Unexplained Weight Loss or Sudden Weight Gain
Both extremes can be liver-related.
- Unexplained weight loss: A damaged liver can`t store glycogen or metabolise nutrients effectively, leading to unintentional weight loss and muscle weakness.
- Sudden weight gain / bloating: Fatty liver disease (which is extremely common in urban India due to poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, and excess alcohol) can cause weight gain concentrated around the belly.
Either way, if your weight is changing without a clear dietary or lifestyle reason, your liver health is worth investigating.
Confusion, Mood Swings, or Brain Fog
This might be the most surprising sign on this list. A condition called hepatic encephalopathy can occur when a severely damaged liver can`t remove toxins like ammonia from the blood. These toxins affect the brain, causing confusion, forgetfulness, irritability, poor concentration, and in serious cases, disorientation. If you or a family member is experiencing sudden mental fog or unexplained personality changes along with any other liver symptoms, seek medical attention urgently.
Who Is at Higher Risk of Liver Problems in India?
Some people should be extra vigilant about their liver health:
- People who consume alcohol regularly
- Those with Type 2 Diabetes or obesity
- People with a family history of hepatitis or liver disease
- Those who frequently take painkillers or medications without medical supervision
- Anyone who has had a blood transfusion before 1992 (hepatitis C risk)
- People eating a diet high in oily, processed, or junk food
If you fall into any of these categories, an annual LFT test is a smart preventive step.
What Is a Liver Function Test (LFT) and What Does It Measure?
A Liver Function Test (LFT) is a simple blood test that measures a range of enzymes, proteins, and substances produced or processed by your liver. It typically checks:
- ALT & AST — liver enzymes that indicate liver cell damage
- ALP — an enzyme that detects bile duct issues
- Bilirubin — to check for jaundice-related conditions
- Albumin & Total Protein — to measure how well your liver is making proteins
- GGT — often elevated in alcohol-related liver damage
Your doctor will use these results together to get a complete picture of your liver health.
Don`t Wait — Early Detection Makes All the Difference
Most liver diseases, including fatty liver and hepatitis, are completely manageable or even reversible when caught early. The liver is also one of the few organs that can regenerate — but only if you act in time. Ignoring symptoms or delaying testing gives liver disease the chance to progress silently into something much harder to treat.
